SRINAGAR: Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell Coordinator Tassaduq Mufti asked officials concerned on Thursday to ensure burning of leaves and twigs which causes severe winter air pollution is stopped immediately.
The burning of abscised leaves, willow and popular twigs (biomass) releases large amounts of airborne particulates which include fine bits of dust, soot, harmful particles and toxic gases aggravating air pollution.
The Coordinator of Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell urged the educational institutions, Srinagar Municipality Corporation (SMC) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to immediately put a stop on the practice of burning of abscised leaves, willow and poplar twigs.
“The incessant burning of leaves also leads to the formation of smog which affects the general visibility.
Similarly, the production of carbon dioxide also contributes to global warming,” the Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell Coordinator said.
