JAMMU: Acting swiftly on the complaint of consumers who were deceived on purchase of packed items, a team of officers of Legal Metrolgy conducted extensive checking of all saleable packaged goods in respect of the marked mandatory declarations required for the information of consumers
According to Manoj Prabhakar Deputy Controller Legal Metrology Enforcement, one of the consumer purchased Bonn Bread marked with MRP Rs 50 and with a festive discount offer of Rs 10 offered by company at Easy Day Janipur but the consumer was charged Rs 50 thus overcharged by Rs 10. The team of officers comprising Assistant Controller Kewal Krishan Inspectors Pooja and Rohit checked the prices of all items feeded in the software of the company and found the complaint genuine as there was discrepancies on the declared prices and feeded prices. A case of overcharging was registered against Easy Day.
The team also inspected Big Bazar market on the basis of consumer complaint and found number of discrepancies in goods prominently displayed for sale. All the bakery items of brand Grand was less by 100 g against marked 400 g weight. The sale of all the underweight bakery items were stopped and product removed from the shelves. There were lot of other discrepancies like smudging of MRP, use of stickers for declaring mandatory declarations etc which is an offence under the relevant law enforced for the purpose. A total of nine companies were booked at Big Bazar Mart and cases registered for legal proceedings with the direction not to sell such deceptive packages so that consumers’ interest is protected.
