‘Judiciary can play pivotal role in conservation of nature’

JAMMU: Two days orientation programme on ‘Forest and Wildlife Conservation for the Judiciary’ organized by Jammu and Kashmir State Judicial Academy (JKSJA) in collaboration with WWF-India and Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment (LIFE) under the guidance of Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, and Committee of Judges, JKSJA including Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar, Chairman, and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal, Member commenced here on Saturday.
The programme was inaugurated by Justice Janak Raj Kotwal, Judge, High Court of Jammu and Kashmir. Moulika Arabhi, Advisor, Centre for Environmental Law, WWF-India, Suresh Chugh, Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K and Vibodh Gupta, Advocate and Member, J&K Legislative Council were also present.
Justice Kotwal emphasized that the District Courts can address to environmental issues while enforcing individual rights and duties.
Vibodh Gupta emphasised on the need to conserve small water bodies in cities and villages.
Abdul Rashid Malik, Director, JKSJA while citing relevant examples talked about importance of environmental jurisprudence. Moulika Arabhi and Suresh Chugh, also spoke on the occasion. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr. Pankaj Chandan, Team Leader, Western Himalayas, WWF-India.
