JAMMU: The Government would explore new and less frequented areas in Jammu region in active cooperation with Tawi Trekkers J&K for the promotion of adventure tourism in Jammu Region.
This was announced by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Ramesh Kumar while felicitating the mountaineers who scaled Kang Yatse peak in Ladakh in a function organised by Tawi Trekkers J&K at Press Club Jammu, here on Monday.
He lauded the role being played by Tawi Trekkers for the promotion of adventure activities in the UT and congratulated the club for producing Everest climbers and international sport climbers.
The Divisional Commissioner presented mementos to the leader of the expedition, Sumit Khajuria and other members of the team Manik Slathia, Shashi Kant Sharma, Shilpa Charak and Sonam Sidharth and appreciated their passion and skill and stamina to summit the 20500ft high peak.
Earlier, president of the club, Ram Khajuria highlighted the achievements of Jammu mountaineers, 11 of whom have scaled the Everest and one of them Colonel Ranvir Singh Jamwal has the distinction of scaling Mount Everest three times and also highest peaks of all the continents.
He disclosed that Tawi Trekkers has planned to attempt Mount Everest in 2025 and the mountaineers are preparing themselves rigorously for the prestigious expedition. A small team of the club is also going to Mun peak in Himachal Pradesh after the monsoons are over besides a few members of the club shall also trek to the base camp of Mount Everest in the first week of October. The club shall also organise 1-day treks for about 2000 students during winter months, he added.
Patron of the club, Ashwani Sharma, former MLA, who presided over the function and Co-Chairman of the Club Zorawar Singh Jamwal also appreciated the dedication and vibrancy of the young members to take the club to greater heights.
While Suraj Parkash Rukwal, Special Secretary, Department of Disaster Manangement, Relief and Rehabilitation, J&K and Neelam Khajuria, Additional Secretary, Youth Services and Sports Department graced the occasion as guests of honour. Prof.C K Khajuria, Principal, Govt. Degree College, Katra; Parveen Sharma, Chairman, The Citizens Co-Operative Bank Ltd, Jammu; Amit Sharma, Wildlife Warden, Jambu Zoo; Rameshwar Mengi, Principal, Shiksha Niketan Group of Schools and Anil Choudhary, Principal, M N D P School were the special guests on the occasion.
Prominent among others present included the Advisor of the club, Prof, Lalit Magotra; patron Rahul Sharma, Prof. Suman Lata, Director Physical Education; Vivek Chauhan, Principal Oriental Academy Senior Secondary School, Jammu; Sushil Singh, Rakesh Goswami and Navneet Gupta of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Shawetica Khajuria , general secretary and Sakshi Magotra, joint secretary of the club and senior members Sushil Chakharia, Rohit Khajuria, Vikas Singh and Vaibhav Sharma.
The function was anchored by Arti Sharma, Principal of Apple Kids International Pre School, Bantalab, Jammu and sponsored by a veteran member of the club, Vivek Chauhan.
