JAMMU: Bharatiya Janata Party has more than one reason to rejoice and celebrate the Supreme Court relief for Rahul Gandhi in one of the defamation cases filed against him, paving way for his reinstatement as the Member of Lok Sabha. The verdict does makes the Gandhi scion politically dwarf for his uncalled for and contemptuous comments, inter-alia, about the attempts of the BJP to capture and control judiciary, thus sending a wrong signal from the foreign soil that Indian judiciary was in crisis. He must be realizing now how impartial and independent the Indian judiciary is. Making unsavory remarks about the judiciary has been a pastime for the Indian pseudo secularists. When decisions go in their favour, the judiciary becomes independent and when against them or their vote back, all ills are traced in the judicial system. The capital punishment to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru is a case in point. Rahul was one among many sickulars, who took pride in joining the infamous protests in Jawaharlal Nehru University, led by Kanahiya Kumar, now his close aide as a Congress leader, which attained notoriety for raising the slogans like, ‘Afzal Hum Sharmanda Hai, Tere Katil Zinda Hai’. Guru was awarded capital punishment by the Supreme Court of India after thorough judicial process. This is how the judicial system was challenged. Post the apex court relief, Rahul and his coterie may not perhaps question the wisdom and sagacity of the country’s top court and that too on foreign soil. Caution must be a watch word.
The second and the more important reason for the BJP to be elated is imminent ‘leadership tussle’ in the rudderless 26 party conglomerate, called I.N.D.I.A. The alliance got a shock, in the midst of euphoric jubilation over, what they perceived scoring a political brownie point against the arch rival saffron outfit by naming their amalgam after emotive India, from the comeback of Rahul Gandhi. His arrival means turning turtle the applecart of many aspirants of the prime ministership post, like Mamta Banerjee, Nitish Kumar, Sharad Pawar, Arvind Kejriwal etc. The Supreme Court decision has ironically divided the Congress rank and file itself with its National President Malikarjun Kharge announcing that the Congress was not in the race for prime ministership, an assertion being seen as an attempt to save that the newly formed I.N.D.I. Alliance from going haywire like pack of cards. The dissent to this announcement came from none other than the mighty Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who countered by saying that Rahul Gandhi was the only choice to stand against Narendra Modi. Gehlot’s political clout in the Congress is not unknown. It is because of his refusal that the present incumbent is heading the party. The tussle is most likely to begin in the I.N.D.I.A after the vote on Delhi services bill.
The third reason for the BJP to be happy over the return of Rahul Gandhi is his lack of political understanding of the issues concerning the nation. He will be at the centre-stage of receiving brick-bats for defaming Indian democracy during his visit to the UK and the US. Criticism of the BJP alright but the tirade against the nation has not gone well with the compatriots. He has based his politics on undermining Indian democracy and its institutions. This might have got him a few cheers from the ‘managed’ crowds, reportedly comprising inimical nationals from some other countries in the closed-door meetings abroad but he is not seen as a serious political contender to the top post back home. Rahul Gandhi’s off-the-cuff remarks on important national issues are not seen as a symptom of an immature political leader. Though he has demonstrated some leadership qualities after Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is more famous for his oft spoken term ‘Mohabbat Ki Dukan’, yet his role as a part time leader, frequently departing on foreign tours, has eroded his credibility hugely. His neglectful behaviour and remarks like ‘flour in litres’ can amuse the audiences but not lead them towards polling booths to vote his party to power. These attributes make him the best asset for the BJP. As late as in March this year, one of the most powerful and senior I.N.D.I.A leaders now, West Bengal Chief Minister is reported to have said in an internal meeting of TMC that Rahul Gandhi is BJP’s biggest asset and the grand old party is busy promoting him to save his image.
