KUPWARA: Police on Wednesday arrested nine Narco smugglers and recovered 2.5 Kg Charas and 30 Kg poppy straw from their possession in Kupwara, Kulgam and Anantnag Districts.
The arrested drug peddlers have been identified as Mohammad Yousuf, son of Kamal Din, resident of Gagal Katiyawali, Mohammad Shafi Katariya, son of Nek Mohammad Katariya, resident of Badgagal, Nisar Ahmad Ganai, son of Ab Gani Ganai, resident of Manzhar Hyhama, Shabir Ahmad Mir, son of Mohammad Sadiq Mir, resident of Dardpora Kralpora and Khalid Ahmad Bajad, son of Nazir Ahmad Bajad, resident of Dardpora Kralpora.
Cases under NDPS Act have been registered and investigation is in progress, more arrests are expected.
Similarly, acting on a tip-off, Kulgam Police intercepted a scooter at Alstop Qazigund and seized 35 pouches of illicit liquor from Tariq Ahmad Bhat, a police spokesperson said.
Two persons — Ajaz Ahmad Sofi and Gulzar Ahmad Sofi — were arrested after 30 kg of poppy straw was seized from their vehicle intercepted at Qazigund market in the district, he said.
In Anantnag, Bilal Ahmad Saqa was arrested after 800 gm of cannabis was seized from him, the spokesperson said.
Cases have been lodged in all the incidents and investigations are underway, the official said.
