16.11 lakh children enrolled in primary, upper primary classes: Naeem

JAMMU: The government on Friday informed that 16,11,462 students were enrolled in Primary and Upper Primary Classes in government and private schools of the State as on 2015-16.
Minister for Education Naeem Akhtar said this while replying to a question by Mohammad Khursheed Alam in the Legislative Council.
He further said 9,15,287 students were enrolled in primary and upper classes in Kashmir division as on 2015-16 while as 6,96,175 students were enrolled in primary and upper primary classes in Jammu division.
Akhtar further stated that efforts are on for transforming the education department to improve learning levels and infrastructure in schools. He said through the process of rationalisation the department is trying to meet the dearth of teachers in schools and many schools were also clubbed where there was less number of students.
He said the government is focusing on consolidation of infrastructure and to raise standards of education in the existing schools, adding that, after this process, the government will certainly look into the demands of upgradation of educational institutions as per the norms.
The Minister said that Midday Meals to the students are being provided as per the national norms and the implementation of the scheme is being closely monitored.
