BANGKOK: India Women scripted an imposing nine-wicket win over Thailand Women in their second Twenty20 of the Asia Cup in Bangkok on Sunday.
Thailand’s batters never quite got going and could only gather 69 for 5 in their 20 overs after opting to bat. India then chased down the paltry target in 11.1 overs for the loss of just Veda Krishnamurthy to canter to their second win of the tournament. Mansi Joshi, the right-arm pacer, struck early for India, sending back Nattakam Chantam and Sirintra Saengsakaorat, the Thailand openers, inside four overs. Playing only her second T20I, Joshi returned figures of 3 -0-8-2 in the only spell she bowled.
Ratannaporn Padunglerd (20) then combined with Nattaya Boochatham (17) to offer some resistance with a third-wicket stand of 24 runs in 12 overs. But Shikha Pandey dismissed Boochatham (17 off 35 balls) to end the resistance in the 13th over. Padunglerd and Sorninarin Tippoch, the captain, added a 20-run fourth-wicket stand before the former was run out by Pandey. In the same over, Tippoch was also run out for seven, as Thailand finished with a modest total.
India’s reply got off to a brisk start with Krishnamurthy and Meghana Sabbineni putting on a 49-run opening stand in just 7.1 overs. Krishnamurthy was quick off the blocks, scoring 35 runs in 26 ball with four boundaries and a six, before she was caught behind off Tippoch.
But Thailand didn’t have any success after that as Meghana (29 not out) and Sushma Verma (3 not out) took India home with 53 deliveries remaining. (PTI)
