JAMMU: Construction of building on GGM Science College cricket ground triggered a strong protest by student fraternity here on Wednesday.
Activists of various students as well as other organisations including Jammu Justice Secular Forum (JJSF), National Students Union of India (NSUI), Progressive Youth Forum (PYF) and Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) assembled at construction site and held a massive protest.
Led by Working President JJSF, Vikram Singh Chib, students raised slogans against the Higher Education Department and College authorities.
Vikram said, “GGM Science College is the prestigious college and it is the joint moral duty of college authorities in particular, students and public in general to protect its dignity and prestige but unfortunately Higher Education authorities and College administration is hell bent to destroy its glory by constructing a structure on its playground.”
Vikram said that students will not allow anybody to shrink the area of the playground by constructing buildings on it.
State President NSUI, Neeraj Kundan said that NSUI will leave no stone unturned to restore the glory of college ground.
Founder and Chief of JJSF, Pushvinder Singh Manhas said that the State Government should refrain from playing with the sentiments and career of the students and sportsmen of the State.
He warned the concerned authorities not to carry out the said proposal of the construction on playground. He threatened the concerned authorities of a strong agitation if the proposed site for construction is not changed.
Activists Avijot Singh, Ranjot and Sunny Parihar also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA Jammu West, Sat Sharma intervened in the matter and directed to stop the work of the building of Science College which was being constructed in the center of Cricket Ground.
He also called on the Principal of the College and asked him about the details of the matter. Expressing concern on the issue, Sat said that this playground is one of the oldest grounds in Jammu and is known as cricketing hub.
“Cricketers from Jammu have special affection with this playground and they love to play cricket here”, he added.
