JAMMU: Making a clarion call to the Edu-leaders across the City of Temples Jammu on the utilization of the sprawling corridors in schools, Rajesh Rathore, Principal JKPS Kunjwani stated, “Every unutilized space in a progressive school, whether it be corridors, staircases, classrooms, boundary wall etc must be converted into learning resources.
Class appropriate items, namely, Timelines in History, depicting Kingdom & rulers, Historical monuments, Literary works etc; Diversified maps pertaining to Rainfall, Agriculture, Commerce & Industries, Forest cover, River system. Mountain ranges, National Parks & Bird sanctuaries in Geography; variety career choice options available today pertaining to Medical/Non-medical Science stream, Commerce stream & Humanities’ stream along with the details of top Institutions related to the field, date of filing Application, selection criteria etc must be displayed properly to evolve students as well-informed individuals ready to take on the future challenges of professional life.
“In addition, display boards in classrooms also help to assist children’s learning in more indirect ways, by rounding out a child’s mental and emotional education. Display boards in classrooms that are used to showcase student work help to give purpose and value to their schoolwork, giving pupils positive affirmation that their work is appreciated, and that every child’s work matters. In addition, where such displays are used as rewards for exceptional work, they can not only provide encouragement and goals to aim for, but also offer inspiration to other pupils, building a culture of support and learning”, reflected the Associate VP, JKPS Kunjwani, Roopinder Kour.
Responding to the multi-faceted utility of Display boards, Inderjeet Kour, School Coordinator, JKPS Kunjwani stated, “School is a place where it’s important for everyone, both staff and students, to feel welcomed. One of the best ways to create a friendly atmosphere is to cultivate a sense of community – and one of the easiest ways to do this is through a large notice-board or display board in a school corridor. Things we can display on our Bulletin board can include details of upcoming events, such as parent-teacher meetings, Sports matches, extracurricular classes, volunteering opportunities, lunch menus as well as school news, latest Circulars, prize-winning masterpieces, Choicest work pertaining to art exhibitions and much, much more”.
Words of wisdom found manifestation in the brilliant commentary of Shashi Rattan, Vice Principal, JKPS Kunjwani, “Schools are often spread over acres of campus, which house thousands of people: from teachers and students to support staff, visitors and parents. One of the most challenging aspects of running an educational Institution is ensuring the safety of all those on campus. Display boards offer a unique way to keep everyone informed about safety information, such as, escape routes, fire evacuation strategies, off-limits zones and more. By installing display boards in major corridors and thoroughfares, as well as in each and every classroom, we can ensure that everyone on campus is aware of the closest emergency exit and what the procedure is in case of a fire or other emergency”.
Highlighting the greater significance of the Display boards in the classrooms, Principal Rajesh Rathore said, “Display boards extend great support to the education of students by assisting them with visual learning. Teachers use display boards to showcase images relevant to the lesson subject. Substantiating the importance of visual learning, a renowned Education Consultant says, “we use our short term memory to process words – this can only retain roughly seven pieces of information. However, images are directly processed by our long-term memory which offers much better retention”.
“This highlights that the use of images assists students in retaining information more accurately over time. In addition, scientific researches claim that visuals are processed 60,000 times faster than text; meaning that pupils can grasp a learning situation significantly faster when images are involved. By using either a wall-mounted or freestanding display board as part of lessons, teachers can offer a more in-depth learning experience for their students, he added.
“Besides, the Display boards transform the dull corridor walls into vibrant colourful knowledge gallery, catching the fancy of young learners in myriad forms. Since visual memory stays for a longer duration, so relevant information displayed at the strategic locations in the school premises is the pressing need of the hour”, the Principal concluded.
