JAMMU: Kachi-Chawni, the academic hub of the winter capital, with huge number of tutorials apart from Government Women College Parade, seems to have become destination for riff-raff and the Street Romeos, who keep frequenting during opening and closure of these institutions unmindful of the police, which willingly plays the role of bystander.
Complaints keep pouring in about growing incidents eve-teasing and passing of lewd comments by the Street Romeos, standing on road-sides or shops between Kachi Chawni Chowk and Brahaman Sabha. They provide ugly spectacle, making it tough for the girls while alighting or leaving their institutions and boarding public transport.
While the policemen, seen occasionally, show indifference towards the growing acts of eve-teasing, the passersby forced some cops to take cognizance of two Road Romeos the other day, when they crossed all limits of decency by teasing two girls, who raised alarm. They were escorted to the Police Station and much to the discomfort of the police party, a young girl Anupama (name changed) also preferred to accompany to see for herself what action is being taken against them.
Anupama found the SHO apparently showing concern and snubbing the eve-teasers while assuring her that strict action will be taken against them. However, to her utter shock the attitude of the SHO changed immediately on receiving a call on his mobile. He counseled Anupama not to insist for registering FIR against the boys, as that would create lot of hassles for her and the other victim girls while pursuing the matter in the court. To her horror, she noticed with disbelief the SHO showing all the courtesies to the boys brought into the Police Station and offering chairs. He, however, politely asked them not to indulge in eve-teasing again and let them go. “With a sarcastic smile, the boys looked at me and left the office of the SHO, Anupama said, adding, “the SHO also left his office.
“I remained there for sometime shocked in disbelief and feeling dejected at the hands of police and eve teasers. And, ultimately after few minutes I also left the office of SHO in disgust with a belief that J&K Police is also like Bollywood police where no innocent can get justice,” she said,.
