Ratan Tata cremated with full state honours in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The final rites of renowned industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata were performed with full state honours at a central Mumbai crematorium on Thursday evening.
The Mumbai police paid tribute to Tata with a gun salute.
The industry titan’s family members, including the half-brother Noel Tata, and top executives from the Tata Group like chairman N Chandrasekaran, were present at the crematorium in Worli.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, his cabinet colleague Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, Congress leader and former CM Sushilkumar Shinde, among others, were also present.
The last rites were performed as per the Parsi tradition, one of the priests present at the crematorium said. After the funeral, there will be three more days of rituals which will be conducted at the late industrialist’s bungalow in Colaba, south Mumbai, he said.
Tata (86), a Padma Vibhushan recipient, died after a brief illness at a city hospital late on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah has condoled the death of Ratan Tata, saying he was a humble man whose contribution can never be forgotten.
“It is shocking. He (Tata) was a humble man.
“He opened his family organisation for everyone. He took his company to the entire world,” Abdullah told reporters here.
The NC president said Tata’s contribution to the country can never be forgotten.
“Today, when is he is no more, he will never be forgotten as what he has done for India is great and he took the country to greater heights,” Abdullah added.
Congress has deeply mourned the sad demise of Legendary Industrialist Shri Rattan Tata and paid rich tributes to him for his remarkable contribution in the nation building.
In a condolence message, JK Congress has expressed great shock over the demise of Rattan Tata and said that contributions in the field of Industrial growth and in the nation building shall always be remembered. He is a role model in the field of corporate social responsibility and charity for the nation.
His image an honest businessman and a gentleman is a distinction. He enhanced the image of the nation worldwide in his field being one amongst the top industrialists of the world. The party has paid rich tributes to the pious soul and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and admirers on behalf of entire rank and file of the party and prayed for peace to the departed soul.
