If 2014 marked a watershed in the politics of the country, the recent poll verdict especially in Utter Pradesh, marks a paradigm shift in the political future of the country. The results of the most populous state of the country show that a ground shift has occurred in the politics of the country. The people are now fatigued with the usual caste, religion based politics and look forward to the development agenda of Narendra Modi, as the recipe to address to their problems. During the campaigning, we watched with abject dejection how the election atmosphere was contaminated by the religion and caste based rhetoric of SP and BSP.
Mayawati went a step further, when she asked the Muslims not to waste their vote and asked them to vote for them. In independent India, it was a brazen attempt to communalise the politics by asking a particular community to vote for her. It seems that the political leaders such as Mayawati are now losing grip on the identity politics because minorities or Dalits want to come out of the ghettos, in which these parties have forced them into. The new generation does not want to see itself as a part of the identity poll recipe but partners in national development. The UP polls have shown that with Narenedra Modi there is a dream of a new India which they too want to share on equal terms with other people of the country.
UP poll results have ensured a safe ground for future of BJP in 2019. They are now straddled comfortably in the largest state of the country and we know that all roads to Delhi pass through UP. Modi will now engage himself, with more vigour for propelling India to a better position in the comity of the nations. In addition, BJP has ensured its presence in Manipur in North East, for which credit should go to some extent to the efforts of Dr Jitendra Singh, who untiringly has invested his time and labour to strength BJP in these states with his dynamism and constructive engagement. The UP polls have on another hand, very subtly shown the regional and divisive politics of BSP and SP that they will only help majority consolidation, if they engage on rabid and brazen minority and Dalit politics.
