SRINAGAR: Immediately after the Eid prayers, security forces had to burst teargas shells and resort to lathicharge to disperse “pro-separatist” demonstrators in the downtown areas of Srinagar.
The trouble started immediately after the Eid-ul-Azha prayers at Eidgah and other mosques in the downtown and Shehar-e-Khas. Hundreds of people, mostly youths, took out a procession from Eidgah, raising pro separatists slogans.
However, when the processionists were trying to march towards main chowk, security forces and state police personnel stopped them. When they insisted to march ahead, security forces resorted to lathicharge which had no impact.
Later, security forces burst teargas shells to disperse the protestors who were pelting stones from lanes and bylanes.
Several persons, including some security personnel were injured in the clashes.
Meanwhile, police has arrested separatist Yasin Malik in Srinagar ahead of the Eid prayers scheduled at the Lal Chowk and curfew has been imposed in the flood-affected area to check any untoward situation.
