The goods and services tax is the biggest tax reform that is waiting to see the light of the day for many years. Currently, neither the Union Government nor the State Government has the power to levy all the taxes. Hence, the GST Bill will bring the much-needed uniformity in the country, which has a complex tax structure.
What is really encouraging is that the Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitly, has allowed some autonomy to State Governments too. It is true that the tax-payer and the tax-man are not ready for this, but once the GST Bill is passed in Parliament and becomes the law, all issues can be sorted out. The consequent easy inter-State movement of goods and services will, indeed, be one of the biggest improvements for the country. All opposition parties must see the merit in this Bill and help the government pass it in the Upper House, where the ruling party is in minority.
