Leftover legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacking Congress and asking the party to take a New Year resolution to allow Parliament to function after a series of stalling exercises for the sake of development is perhaps a stunning example of BJP’s contradictory political behaviour: the party that disrupted the Parliament the most in the last five decades is crying foul that the Opposition is not allowing the House to work. The cavalier manner in which it had brought the last Lok Sabha to a historical low seems to have evaporated from its self-righteous memory as it accuses the Opposition of undemocratic behaviour. The BJP is no stranger to double-speak. Whether it’s on secularism, communal riots, nuclear deal, FDI, or black money, it’s always armed with two convenient stock versions. This is quite surprising that without taking up the issue in the Parliament, Modi finds Jan Sabha a comfortable place to arose public emotions. It is not that PM is a novice in politics. He chooses the occasion, place and time to hit on the topics to keep public in good humour in a very calculated way. Modi said, “This is the misfortune of India, Parliament where laws are made is not being allowed to function. Those who have been rejected by people seized its functioning. They do not allow Parliament to run. I request all these political parties not to do so”. The Prime Minister’s attack on Congress on the issue of Parliament disruptions comes after key government Bills including the GST were held up due to a stalemate with the opposition party. Modi also chose the occasion to announce that the government has abolished interview process for class III and class IV employees and now appointments will happen strictly on basis of merit. While noting that the Central Government is implementing it from 1st January as a “New Year Gift”, the Prime Minister urged state governments to do the same. The situation looks very dicey for the saffron party but for Congress any gain is beneficial. The ongoing stalemate in Parliament is the leftover legacy of the Congress-led UPA Government’s regime.
