North Zone Inter-University Handball Championship: Walkovers for JU, BGSBU in opening round
JAMMU: Hosts University of Jammu and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) Rajouri got walkovers in the opening round of men’s competition on the inaugural day of the North Zone Inter-University Handball Championship on the JU campus, here on Friday.
While JU men awarded walkover against Integral University Lucknow, the BGSBU got walkover after Thapar University Patiala failed to report the organisers despite confirming their entry.
In another scheduled first round match, Bundelkhand University got walkover against DCRUST Murthal, Sonepat in Haryana.
However, five other teams of Punjab Technical University (PTU) Jalandhar, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar, Delhi University, GADVASU and Lovely Professional University Phagwara won their respective matches to move into the next round of the competition.
Likewise in men’s section, PTU Jalandhar and LPU Phagwara won their respective matches to qualify for the second round.
Earlier, the competition was declared open by former Director General of Police (Security), Dr Ashok Bhan, who was Chief Guest in the inaugural function.
He exhorted the need for bringing back the glory of once medal winning event of handball at the national level by way of extra efforts on part of those associated with the game.
Vice Chancellor, JU, Prof R.D Sharma presided.
Speaking to the gathering, he expressed his happiness over hosting of two back-to-back national level events on the campus.
Earlier, Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau in his welcome address presented a detailed note of the event. He expressed gratitude to the distinguished gathering, especially the former DGP and Vice Chancellor for sparing their valuable time.
The results: MEN: Bundelkhand University Jhansi got walkover DCRUST Murthal, Sonepat; JU got walkover Integral University Lucknow; BGSBU Rajouri got walkover Thapar University Patiala; PTU Jalandhar beat Kumaun University Nainital 32-06; GNDU Amritsar defeated CCSU Meerut 39–29; Delhi University outplayed HP University Shimla 41–26; Guru Angad Dev University Ludhiana trounced CSMU Kanpur 28–26; LPU Phagwara blanked Punjab Agriculture University 40–34.
WOMEN: HP University Shimla beat CDLU Sirsa 32-11; PTU Jalandhar defeated University of Allahabad 25-02; LUP Phagwara outplayed HNBGU Srinagar, Garhwal 23-03; MJPR University Barelly got walkover Amity University, Noida; PU Chandigarh got walkover Bundelkhand University, Jhansi.
