New Delhi: Five-time World Boxing Champion Mary Kom is eyeing a gold medal at the upcoming Incheon Asian Games after settling for bronze four years ago.
“Our preparation has been good so far and we are looking forward to the games. I am definitely aiming for gold medal and a bronze will certainly not suffice this time,” said Mary at the inauguration of a youth training centre in Alipur on Saturday.
The 31-year-old champion athlete also batted for youth and women empowerment at the event.
“At a time when women seem to be most vulnerable, we need to empower ourselves. Boxing is one of the best self defence. If I can go and play at the international level, you all can,” she added.
She also emphasised the need for more such training centres especially in remote areas.
Boxer Vijender Singh, who was also part of the event, emphasised on the need of opening more youth training centres.
“This can be one of the best platform for the youth to shine and showcase their talent. At least such a vast stretch of land has been utilised for good purpose. I hope they will start more such youth training academies here,” he said.
Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Sonowal laid the foundation stone of the newly constructed office building. He called upon the youth to channelise their capabilities.
“We must utilise the untapped potential of youth of our country. The Indian youth icons like Mary Kom and Vijender Singh reflects the fighting spirit of modern Indian youth,” said Sonowal.
