Jammu Mayor encourages students to be part of historic move to improve environment

JAMMU: The Mayor of Jammu city, Rajinder Sharma on Tuesday took the ongoing anti-polythene and anti-plastic campaign to GGM Science College and Govt MAM College and encouraged the students to be part of the historic move aimed at improving the environment of Jammu.
He educated the students on hazards of using polythene and plastic made materials in daily life and talked about alternates like bags made of paper, cloth and cellulose-starch which are developed by DRDO.
“You are the future of this great nation and it is very important for you to be well versed with the challenges confronting our country,” the Mayor said adding, “Polythene has emerged among the big challenges of urbanised lifestyle and we should jointly overcome it. So please stop using things of polythene and single use plastic in your lives, encourage others also to do the same and take to alternates for having healthy environment around us.”
The students and staff of these Colleges pledged their full support for the success of the move with the College authorities of these institutes expressing willingness to be the part of the walk scheduled for May 26 to aware masses to stop using polythene and plastic made materials.
On this occasion many students and staff members filled the Commitment Certificate using the app to join the campaign.
Students and the staff of these Colleges said that they shall now use carry bags made of biodegradable materials to lower the hazards to environment.
The Mayor expressed confidence that with enthusiasm among the youth for supporting the campaign, Jammu will be free from polythene and plastic made things within a month.
Prof. Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Principal of GGM Science College; Dr. Anil Kumar Verma, Vice Principal; Nodal Officer, Dr. Deepali Mahajan; NSS Programme Officer, Convenor, Prof. Preeti Dogra and those from the Eco Club also spoke on the topic.
The students of MAM College presented a Skit on the harms of using polythene and plastic in daily lives and also showed their talent in the form of a ‘rap’ while the students of GGM Science College presented a Skit.
At GGM Science College the Mayor said that he also got his higher education from this College and was a part of NCC and had participated in 1991 March Past at Raj Path in New Delhi and saluted to the then President of India. Rajinder Sharma also planted a sapling in the College.
A debate on ‘Harmful Effects of using Polythene and Plastic Materials’ was also organised on this occasion and the winners were awarded.
In the debate competition at GGM Science College first position was won by Anil Kumar; second by Damandeep Singh; third place was shared by Ananya Gupta and Aakriti Sharma.
At Govt MAM College Principal, Prof. Dr. G.S Rakwal and Program Officer NSS-SFU, Dr. Vishal Sharma also addressed the students.
Winners in the debate competition in MAM College were Aarushi, won 1st prize; Deepika, 2nd prize while Abrar and Palak jointly won 3rd prize.
