IUST hosts special lecture on mental health and floods

SRINAGAR: The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) on Tuesday organised a special lecture with interactive session on Mental Health and effects of flood on society.
The session was organised by International Centre for Spiritual Studies, IUST in collaboration with MSF (Doctors without Borders).
Project Coordinator, MSF Christine M. Slagt, Clinical Psychologist, Asiya Nazir, MSF, Altaf Paul, Clinical Psychologist, MSF, Zahoor Ahmad, MSF and Dr. S Iqbal Quraishi, Head, International Centre for Spiritual Studies, IUST were present at the session.
Addressing the gathering, Christine M. Slagt highlighted the effects of natural calamities like floods, earthquakes etc on the mental health of people. In her presentation, Slagt emphasised on the strategies need to be adopted during natural calamities.
Organiser of the event, Dr. Quraishi gave a detailed account of effects of the recent flood on the mental health of the student community. “It is imperative that consistent counseling sessions are held to help the distressed students,” he added.
On the occasion, the clinical psychologists and mental health counsellors of MSF had detailed sessions with the students from various departments of IUST which was followed by a question answer session.
Later, the representatives of MSF, later, had a detailed meeting with the Vice Chancellor IUST, Prof A.R Trag wherein the role of youth exhibited during the recent floods was appreciated and it was further reiterated that the youth should be involved in the post flood rehabilitation operations as well.
The meeting emphasised for the need to train the youth for post eventualities in in educational institution.
Prof A.R Trag assured MSF of all possible help for future endeavors that can help the student community in particular and the masses in general.
