Is everything destined or do we have free will?
The whole world believes in destiny. We believe in luck, fate, chance, and serendipity. We believe that life is predestined. Therefore, we think that we can do nothing about anything. We even believe that marriages are made in heaven, only to be suffered on earth. But is this the Truth?
Things happen to us and no doubt we have to accept what happens. But are we just helpless spectators in this drama of life or do we have the opportunity to control our destiny? We grow up believing in this myth that it is God’s will that will unfold in our life. It often seems like God is a dictator sitting somewhere high up in the stars, using a remote control to control the fate of the 8 billion people on earth. But this is not true.
Just because we believe in the fairy tales of our destiny, we are not motivated to take charge of our life. We are not inspired to create a change. We submit to our fate and have no faith in the Divine laws that govern the universe. We live with ignorance, and we do not understand what controls our destiny. Sometimes, we think that a prayer will magically change our life and at other times, we live helplessly and hopelessly. We believe that we are cursed, and we live as we nurse, curse, and rehearse our hurts. Because we believe that everything is predestined, we give up. We do not take charge of our life and our destiny.
God has not made us like robots that live and die, without the power to choose our destiny. While He has made trees to be bound to the ground, He has given us the power to move and to do what we will. While He has created animals, and other creatures to live by instinct, He has blessed human beings to live by the intellect. We are the only living organisms on earth who have been blessed with the free will to choose.
We are in charge of our destiny. Whatever unfolds in our life, is a reaction to our own action. It is the universal law – what you do, will come back to you. Therefore, we control our destiny.
What controls our actions? Our actions are controlled by thoughts that become feelings. These actions become seeds that are planted in the garden of our life. Just like the seeds we plant decide the fruits on the tree, the deeds we do decide our destiny. There is nothing like luck. The Truth is that we pluck the fruit based on our own deeds and these deeds are not just some random acts that happen out of nowhere, they are a result of an intelligent choice that we make out of the willpower that each one of us possesses. Therefore, it is foolish to believe that everything is predestined. Our destiny is in our hands. We can take charge of our actions and our life. We have a free will. If we don’t use it, then we lose the opportunity of controlling our destiny. Those who believe the Truth, they achieve!
