According to the Constitution, the Union of India is unitary in character and federal in structure. States have sufficient powers and adequate freedom to manage their functions. But the Centre has to be economically strong to keep the country together. The GST is in the right direction, and will align the Indian economy with global economy. This is why the collective political wisdom of both Houses passed this legislation. Global investors desire a uniform taxation regime and avoid multiple taxation structure. It will ensure ease of doing business. All major democratic and federal countries like the US, France, Germany, Australia, Canada and South Africa already have GST in place.
