JAMMU: Kashmir unrest is a criminological problem and to find the solution carrying out dialogue under realm of political ambit is not enough rather to address this problem strengthening of rule of law is a must.
This was stated by the Criminologists Society in an open letter written to visiting All-Party Delegation (APD). The Society said that APD efforts to woo the separatists are sure to fail as they are trying to deal with religious zealots who believe that they are smelling victory even in the present plight of death and destruction. Society has said that though the visiting leaders are trying to view the present problem from a political prism, it’s actually a Criminological problem, to which aspect nobody has given any thought. “The biggest problem in Kashmir today is of dealing with mob mentality, the berserk mobs torching government and private properties and of the ways to deal with the present situation”, the letter stated adding that there is an urgent need to develop a culture of lawfulness in the state which will strengthen the Rule of Law. “We need to make the society in J&K feel that whatever imaginary or actual grievances they have, these can be addressed only through legal means and through the four pillars of a democratic setup”, it said. “The Criminologists Society feels that by marginalising lawless behavior in the state, this approach will help protect the society against the present threat to the state from extremism, corruption, political violence and public fatalism and will help to create mainstream culture, thoughts and ethos in the society of J&K sympathetic to the rule of law”, it added.
