R S Pura: The last rites of Constable Gurnam Singh were performed at his native village in RS Pura area on Monday.
Before lighting the pyre, the brave heart was given emotional farewell by thousands of villagers who had assembled to pay their last homage outside his home.
The brave soldier was very popular in his native village and large number of those connected with him remembered him and his heroic deeds before joining the last journey of the martyr.
Gurnam attained martyrdom in the line of duty late Saturday night after he was injured in a sniper attack from Pakistan. He was instrumental in repulsing the infiltration bid from Hiranagar sector of Jammu frontier.
His funeral procession was showered with flower petals amid chants of patriotic and religious
slogans.
Several senior BJP ministers, party leaders, local MLA ,civil and police officers besides senior BSF officers were present on the occasion.
BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, PHE minister Sukhnandan Choudhary, Industries and commerce Minister Chander Prakash Ganga, MLA Dr Gagan Bhagat attended the last rites and paid glowing tributes to the martyr.
