State U-19 boys’ volleyball meet begins

A spiker in action on the opening day of the inter-district volleyball tournament at Akhnoor on Wednesday.

AKHNOOR: Inter-district State level under-19 boys’ Volleyball tournament got underway at Government Higher Secondary School grounds, here under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS).

The opening day witnessed first round of the competition with Kathua, Baramulla, Poonch, Samba and Udhampur winning their respective matches thereby making it to the quarterfinals stages. However, hosts Jammu district could not do well and lost to Udhampur spikers 1-3.
Earlier, the competition was declared open by SDM Akhnoor, Suresh Chander in the presence of district officer (DYSS), Jammu, Sukhdev Raj Sharma, Principal HSS Boys, Balji Thaploo and Principal HSS Girls, Ashok Kumar.
In all, 18 teams from various districts of the State are taking part in this knock-out competition.
Today’s matches were officiated by the technical penal including Mulkh Raj Sharma, Neeraj Sharma, Tarsem Lal, Manik Nargotra, Shashi Sharma, Bua Ditta and Jagjit Singh.

Lack of Facilities: The opening day of the State level tournament witnessed lack of facilities at the ground level. While the participants had to move around in search of clean drinking water to quench their thirst, the technical officials had tough time to hold two matches simultaneously with just two balls at their disposal.

The Detailed Results: Kathua beat Pulwama 3-1 (25-10, 28-26, 23-25, 25-11); Baramulla defeated Doda 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-15); Poonch trounced Rajouri 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 21-25, 25-13, 15-04); Samba blanked Budgam 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-15); Udhampur outplayed Jammu 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23).
