The Aadhaar Bill is certainly a welcome move as it provides the detailed provisions for the controversial Aadhaar project. Aadhaar has enabled direct benefits transfer and has saved the government crores of rupees, which would otherwise go to ghost accounts and ineligible beneficiaries.
The provision that Aadhaar will not be treated as confidential should be seen in the backdrop of treating national security as paramount.
However, the government would do well to define what constitutes national security and the agencies with whom the details of Aadhaar will be shared. This will generate more confidence in the public that private information will not be misused.
