Pahari painting

Dear Editor,
It is disappointing that there is no government policy to preserve Pahari style of painting. The contribution of Pahari painters was not confined to the mountain areas alone, it had extended to Punjab plains, as is evidenced in ‘Painters at the Sikh Court, a Study Based on Twenty Documents’ by Prof B. N Goswamy. A mural depicting ‘Shri Guru Gobind Singh and the Five Beloved Ones’, at the Golden Temple, was painted by a Kangra artist commissioned by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. As per the late Bhai Gian Singh Naqqash, the mural is the copy of a miniature painting originally in the collection of Raja Sansar Chand of Kangra.
Kanwarjit Singh Kang,
Mohali
