What Women’s Day?

0 113

Dear Editor,
Celebrating just one day for women is unfair. The National Family Health Survey confirms that the girl child still remains unwanted. As per the survey, the sex ratio is worse in urban areas because of better access to technology and doctors. The mindset has undergone little change in society though literacy has increased. Women’s Day is all about marketing. The main issues of gender equality and justice, empowerment, crime against women and foeticide are skipped during celebrations. What about underprivileged women? What does it mean to them? A majority of women treat matrimony as the final destination and treat their male counterpart as a decision-maker. Despite the growing rate of participation of women in politics and the corporate world, the status of women has not changed. Safety of women in India is still questionable. Give a woman the freedom to spread her wings, only then will Women’s Day be a cause for celebration in the real sense.
