Bid to smuggle cement foiled

JAMMU: Continuing with its drive against tax evaders, a joint effort of Excise and Commercial Taxes department thwarted yet another attempt of smuggling of cement from outside the State. The team apprehended a vehicle (Tractor/trolley) loaded with cement, when it was attempting to enter the State through an illicit route in Kotepunnu area of Kathua District. On physical checking, the vehicle was found loaded with cement bags. The driver made an attempt to evade payment of Toll under the J&K levy of Tolls Act 1995 and the requisite dues under the J&K VAT Act 2005. Accordingly, penalty / fine amounting to Rs.55,125 was imposed and recovered by the departments, on spot under the relevant Act/ Rules.
The operation was carried by the team headed by Anoo Malhotra Additional Commissioner Commercial Taxes, Khalid Majid, Deputy Commissioner Commercial Taxes (V&I), Jammu, Rajesh Sharma, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur, Excise and Taxation Officers, and other staff of Excise and Commercial Taxes departments. The dealers/drivers were cautioned to desist from following illicit routes for import of goods.
