Based on the Seventh Pay Commission report, the government has fixed Rs 18,000 as the minimum salary for government employees (Class IV category). This works out to be Rs 1,000 per day if benefits and holidays are taken into account. Against this, the government has fixed a mere Rs 300-odd per day as the minimum wages for those working in the private sector. One hardly needs to compare the working conditions. We have teachers in both government and private sectors. One gets Rs 50,000 and the other struggles to get even Rs 5,000. Is not the government responsible for fostering this disparity? Why not equal wages for both, when the Directive Principles speak for parity?
