Dear Editor,
Implicit in the arrest of seven of the powers-that-be in FIFA, an organisation responsible for running global multi-billion dollar sport events including the football World Cup, by the US and Swiss officials on charge of bribery and corruption, is the fact that materialism is spreading its ugly tentacles in the fields of sports over the world. This is evident in cricket as well.
To the chagrin of billions of football fans all over the world, the apprehended FIFA big guns are allegedly embroiled in the awarding of 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively, and have reported accepted gratitude involving billions of dollars. This shocking development will certainly bring a long-term impact on FIFA’s credentials, regardless of what happens to its beleaguered president Sepp Blatter. There is politics too, with Russia accusing the West for the
developments.
