As the Modi government completes two years in office today, Congress is all guns on the performance platform against him for “ignoring” the interests of youths and farmers, “kneeling down” before Pakistan, and “playing” with internal security of the country. The Modi-government had made tall promises in elections for youths and farmers but the result is disappointing. On the foreign policy front, the government has “knelt down” before Pakistan which is a “failure”. “Pakistan’s (investigation) team came to India to probe Pathankot Air Base attack but when it comes to NIA, it cannot go to a country from where the terrorists came, blamed the Congress party. The internal security was left wide open with BJP trying to save and protect its people who were lodged in jail in connection with Malegaon blasts case and this is the biggest game the BJP is playing with the internal security of the country, blames the Congress. During the campaigning for the 2014 Parliamentary elections Prime Minister Modi had promised to create two crore jobs in a year but opportunities have shrunk to only 1.34 lakh jobs. In eight sectors, 20,000 jobs have been cut between October 2015 and December 2015. Forty-eight per cent of people of the country earn livelihood in agriculture sector but the government is not concerned about them. Rs 1.14 lakh crore of bad debts of corporate sector were written off but if a farmer fails to return a loan of Rs 10,000, action is taken against him. Industrial production, export, and area under cultivation have reduced, the promise of raising MSP incorporating entire production cost and 50 per cent profit has not been carried out. 3,000 farmers, 1,800 in Maharashtra alone, and 6,710 farm labourers have committed suicide this year. On the issue of the corruption, the Prime Minister is “quiet” on Vyapam scam in MP, mines scam in Rajasthan and PDS scam in Chhattisgarh. The only plus point one sees is the coming of BJP government at the Centre has been able to overcome the policy paralysis inherited form Congress. The worst the BJP Government could not overcome was the non-passing of GST Bill by Rajya Sabha and now also the fate of bringing uniform taxation on commodities and services looks not that bright. Woes are not over yet on the communal side country saw beef issue besides Jat agitation over reservation which kept Haryana and Rajasthan boiling. No doubt two years is too short a period to judge the performance, but Modi has a long list of promises to keep.
