The Union Government’s decision to withdraw LPG subsidy from the well-off class is welcome. Incontrovertibly, there are myriad inconsistencies in the system and, therefore, a holistic revamping of the mechanism is absolutely inevitable for obvious reasons.
On similar grounds, the government is spending gargantuan amounts in the Public Distribution System, particularly on social sector schemes like issuing below poverty line cards. Strangely, the BPL label, once tagged to the beneficiaries, is almost perennial, despite drastic improvements in their economic conditions.
