10-yr-RI to husband in dowry death case

JAMMU: Principal Sessions Judge Bhadarwah M.K Sharma on Tuesday awarded 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to Sanjay Kumar, son of Hans Raj, resident of Narnoo Tehsil Bhadarwah in dowry death case.
According to the police case, the deceased Sona Devi was married to the accused on August 29, 2009 and it was alleged that after some days of marriage, the accused started torturing and harassing the deceased with a view to coerce her to bring more dowry. On November 12, 2009, there was a marriage of cousin brother of the deceased at village Manthla but the accused sent his parents to attend the marriage and did not allow the deceased to participate in the marriage and in the intervening night of November 12 and 13, 2009, the accused throttled Sona Devi to death.
Observing that the convict has assassinated his young wife of 19 years, who was the only daughter of her mother viz Prosecution Witness Darshana Devi, a widow, Justice Sharma sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years for the commission of offence under Section 304-II RPC. Besides, the court also observed that a compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be just and reasonable amount for providing financial assistance to the mother of the deceased which shall be paid within one month by the Member Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir State Legal Services Authority.
