World Environment Day celebrated across Leh

LEH: The World Environment Day was celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm across Leh on Friday. The main function was held at the office premises of Women Alliance Leh (WAL) organised in collaboration with Young Drukpa Assocaiation (YDA) and People’s Action Group for Inclusion Right (PAGIR).

Rinchen Angmo President of WAL informed that few years back with the initiative of WAL Leh has succeed to ban the use of polythene. But she expressed displeasure that because of growing wrapper products like Maggi, Kurkure and chips in market, it becomes uncontrollable. She informed that WAL has sent letter to all the Nambardars and other representatives of all villages of Leh requesting them to organise such awareness camp in their respective villages.

“It is the responsibility of every individual to keep the environment clean, celebrating one day in a year doesn’t make any change until and unless every individual does not understand the importance of keeping the environment clean, change must happen in the mind of every individual” Mohammad Iqbal President of PAGIR said during the function. He informed that PAGIR is producing fine products from waste materials and papers and sell it to the tourists by making source of income for the differently abled people.

President YDA Padma Tashi highlighting the importance of day readout five points memorandum which includes, to make Ladakh a polythene free zone, ban on washing vehicles and clothes at Shey Mord (Sindhu Ghat), ban on disposal of cups and plates in Leh, check and balance on the old diesel vehicles to keep the air pollution of Leh under control and for initiating extra cleaning drive in main Leh Nullah.

As part of this celebration, a procession was organised to spread awareness among general masses about the protection of Ladakh’s fragile environment. This procession started from WAL Complex Chubi participated by members of YDA, WAL, PAGIR, SECMOL and large number of environment lovers holding banners, placard, pamphlets and through skit play went through main bazaar, bus stand and culminated at Council Secretariat where the stakeholders submitted a memorandum to the CEC LAHDC Leh.
