Sarfu’s wife arrested, brother flees; 4 kg heroine recovered

JAMMU: Police on Friday arrested widow of a notorious trans-border smuggler from her house in Khour camp area late last night and recovered a large quantity of narcotic substances from her posession.
With the arrest of Preeto Devi, wife of Late Sarfu Ram, police claimed to have busted a major drug racket operating in the region.
“Sarfu Ram, who was an infamous drug dealer in Jammu had died under suspicious circumstances in 2011; we came to know that his family too was involved in this illicit trade. On specific information, we raided his house in Khour camp area and recovered large quantity of narcotic substances from there,” Inspector General of Police Jammu range Danesh Rana told reporters on Friday.
The police raided the residence of Sarfu Ram, arrested his widow Preeto Devi and recovered 4.115 kg heroine and Indian currency Rs 8,94,500 in cash, he said.
Rana said the kingpin of the racket, Ajieet Kumar, who is the younger brother of Sarfu Ram managed to escape, adding “We are hopeful to nab him soon.” Her two sons who were also involved in the illicit trade were serving their term in a Jail in Punjab, he said.
On 18th August 2011, trans-border smuggler Sarfu was found hanging inside the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC), Miransahib. He was arrested with Rs 10 lakh cash and narcotics at New Delhi and shifted to Jammu. During his interrogation, the trans-border smugglers had reportedly also disclosed names of some senior police officers during questioning, who pushed him in trans-border smuggling.
After his mysterious death, Police had said that Sarfu had committed suicide inside the JIC but family members had alleged that he was killed in custody by the police as he was having secrets of police officers.
