Jammu: Diane Miller, Regional English Language Officer (RELO), US Embassy, New Delhi, visited Model Academy School to attend the closing ceremony of the English Access Micro-scholarship Programme.

The US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs funds the two year programme in India and around the world. It provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 13-20 year-olds from economically disadvantaged sectors through after-school classes and intensive sessions.

Nearly 100 students from Model Academy were a part of this programme.  During the two years students learnt about American society and culture, democratic values and attended field trips to enhance their experience.

Diane was accompanied by Rachna Sharma, Coordinator Access Programme, India. Rupa Gupta, Management Representative, Usha Gadoo, officiating Principal and Access teachers were also present on the occasion.

In his welcome address, Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER, appreciated the efforts made by the US Government in providing both funding and opportunity for students to participate in the programme.

He expressed that the school will continue to further the objectives of RELO and promote the enhancement of English language skills, especially among learners from the disadvantaged sections of society.

The Access students presented a beautiful song titled “Hall of Fame” which was much appreciated by the audience. The students spoke ebulliently about their experiences.

They expressed gratitude to the US Government and the school for the golden opportunity to be a part of this laudable program.

Diane presented the certificates to the students and congratulated them for their efforts. She encouraged them to continue learning and acquiring English language skills and hoped that they would give back to their communities by helping the less fortunate ones. She also thanked the Project Coordinator, Dr. Adit Gupta, the teacher trainers, Access teachers and the administrative staff for ensuring the program’s success. The Access students conducted the entire event.
