Srinagar: Massive rescue operations continued in the flood-hit area of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday even as the death toll crossed 200 in the worst floods that the state has seen in the last 60 years.
Taking note of the flood situation, the United Nations (UN) has offered to help both India and Pakistan in their rescue and relief efforts to lakhs of affected people, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told PTI .
Meanwhile, light rainfall is predicted in the state by the Met Department today as massive rescue operations are underway.
“Light rainfall is predicted in the isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir,” said SS Singh, Deputy Director General, Met department.
The Indian Air Force has deployed over 40 aircraft and helicopters including twelve AN-32, four IL-76, five C-130J and two C-17 transport aircraft to help in the rescue work.
Indian Army rescued over 22,000 people from the state. However, thousands of people continue to be stranded.
Jammu-Srinagar highway has been cut-off after it suffered extensive damage due to the floods making it difficult for the 1,500 trucks carrying essential supplies to reach the stranded people.
