MBBS admission fraud in GMC

STATE TIMES NEWS

JAMMU: A startling fraud came to surface when two candidates, seeking admission in the MBBS course in Government Medical College Jammu under disability category, were not actually found eligible by the Medical Board of the Hospital.
After passing the National Eligibility and Cum Entrance Test (NEET), both the candidates came to GMC Jammu to take admission for MBBS through Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE).
While one student had fake disability and the other candidate had put temporary disability certificate in her documents.
GMC administration has recommended to BOPEE to cancel the disability eligibility of both the students and cancel their seats.
The BOPEE has issues a list of 172 candidates for the year 2023, which include 24 in GMC Jammu. The list includes four reserved seats on the basis of disability.
On behalf of BOPEE, the Medical Board was recommended to confirm the disability of the four reserved candidates. When the documents of the four candidates were examined, a student from Poonch had included both permanent and temporary disability certificates with his documents. The other student, resident of Poonch, had attached temporary disability certificate in her documents. Upon this the GMC administration became suspicious. All four candidates were examined by the medical board of the college. One male student and one female student were found ineligible on the basis of disability though both of them have been issued disability certificates by the Poonch CMO.
The basis of 40 percent disability is considered permanent. It has been reported that both of them have passed the NEET exam on the basis of disability. Sources said that for the first time in the history of GMC, cases of fake disability certificates have been detected.
According to Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal of GMC Jammu, the medical board of the college has found both the students ineligible under disability category. “We have recommended BOPEE to cancel the disability eligibility of both the candidates and have sought two new seats”, he said.
BOPEE Controller Dr Sunil Gupta says that the GMC administration has recommended to cancel the disability eligibility of the two candidates and we are working on it.
Accordingly, two new candidates will be sent to GMC for admission. In comparison to last year, GMC Jammu has got eight less seats than allotted for the year 2023 and 24. This year MBBS admissions are taking place on 172 seats. Of these, four seats are reserved on the basis of disability. Last year, GMC had admitted candidates to 184 seats instead of the prescribed 180 MBBS seats.
Taking strict cognizance of this, the National Medical Commission has reduced eight seats this year. However, the GMC administration and Jammu and Kashmir government are making efforts to restore the earlier four additional seats and the reduced seats.
