Tsunami PM extends sympathies to JapanNew Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended his sympathies to the people of Japan on the fifth anniversary of the massive earthquake which left over 18,000 dead.

“On 5th anniversary of Great East Japan Earthquake, India offers deep sympathy to those affected. We admire the resilience of people of Japan”, he tweeted.

The offshore earthquake had spawned a monster tsunami in Japan that left about 18,500 people dead or missing along its northeastern coast and sparked the worst nuclear disaster in a quarter century.

The waves had also swamped power supplies at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, causing reactor meltdowns that released radiation in the most dangerous nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986 and which continues to leave some areas uninhabitable.
