Jammu, is grappling with an escalating traffic problem, primarily caused by wrong and illegal parking. From narrow lanes to congested markets, the issue of improper parking is affecting daily commuters, local businesses, and the overall flow of traffic. The growing concerns of shopkeepers and residents have prompted calls for urgent action from the administration to curb this pressing problem.

Sanjeev Khajuria, a shopkeeper in Jammu, highlighted the challenges faced by local businesses due to improper parking in front of shops.
He shared, “Wrong parking is adding woes to our market. Customers struggle to navigate the streets, and this results in lower footfall for shops.” The congestion caused by vehicles parked haphazardly is not only obstructing the flow of traffic but also causing significant distress to local traders as also the pedestrians.

Mandeep Sharma, another shopkeeper, expressed his concerns about people parking their vehicles outside shops, blocking entryways, and causing difficulties for customers.
He staid, “Vehicles are parked outside shops by unknown people, and there’s no check on this issue. This could eventually lead to mishaps, and it needs immediate attention”, he said, adding that the lack of parking discipline is increasingly affecting daily life and the local economy.

Shubham Bhagat, a concerned shopkeeper, pointed out that customers are discouraged from visiting their shops due to the inconvenience caused by parked vehicles. He explained, “Many potential customers avoid our shops because they can’t easily access them. The parked vehicles outside create an unwelcoming environment, impacting sales.” The blocked pathways and cramped streets further discourage people from shopping in congested areas, which leads to a reduction in the overall business activity, he said.

Ravi Rohmetra, a local resident, shared his observations on the growing issue of vehicles being parked on both sides of the road, including footpaths. He said, “Local vehicles are parked on the double side of the road, even occupying the footpaths. This not only causes congestion but also forces pedestrians to walk on the roads, increasing the risk of accidents. Illegal parking needs immediate attention from the authorities.” Despite the availability of parking facilities in some parts of the city, many drivers choose to park their vehicles wherever convenient, leading to chaos, he said.

Sanak Shrivat, a resident of Jammu, expressed frustration, saying, “People park their vehicles anywhere, despite the presence of parking facilities. This careless attitude towards parking is worsening the situation every day.”

Vikrant Singh, a concerned citizen, pointed out that Jammu’s traffic problem is largely due to the rise in illegal parking. He remarked, “Jammu is facing a severe traffic problem, and it’s primarily caused by improper parking. This issue requires immediate attention from the administration. It’s time to take strict action and implement a structured solution.”
