Terror concern

Terrorism has been the centre of debate ever since  world realised the dangers it posed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his UN Assembly address had called for joint  mechanism to stem the rot. There had been a cool response from others. India has been highlighting the scourge by Pakistan to keep India engaged in low intensity-long duration war. Now Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be talking about the same in Lahore when SAARC meets on August 3. All these years Indian effort to move world and bring everyone on a single platform has not brought the expected results. China had blocked India’s move in the UN for action against Pakistan for the release of 26/11 mastermind Zaki Ur Rehman Lakhvi from jail. The UN Sanctions Committee, which met at India’s request, was to seek a clarification from Pakistan on Lakhvi’s release in the 26/11 trial but China blocked the move on grounds that India did not provide sufficient information. India approached the UN last month against Lakhvi’s release in April from a jail in Rawalpindi. The Islamabad High Court had declared his detention illegal and ordered his release. The United States and Saudi Arabia have put sanctions on six entities and individuals charged with funding terror organisations including Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). Earlier, at the Washington Nuclear Security Summit Modi had said, “Terrorism is globally networked. But, we still act only nationally to counter this threat. “The reach and supply chains of terrorism are global, but genuine cooperation between nation states is not. On the other hand China once again played the truant by defending its decision to once again block India’s bid at the UN to ban Jaish-e-Mohammad chief and mastermind of the Pathankot terror attack Masood Azhar, saying that it acts on such issues based on facts and rules in an “objective and just manner”. The UN had banned the JeM in 2001 but India’s efforts for a ban on Azhar after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack also did not fructify as China, one of the five permanent members of the UN group with veto powers, didn’t allow the ban apparently at the behest of Pakistan again.
