Myopic outlook
Every militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir, without going into the technicalities and intricacies, whether on civilians or security forces, a common man knows is the handy work of Pakistan supported elements. And the political leadership also reiterates the same. Obituary references are made as usual. The present BJP government headed by Narendra Modi had spoken big on curtailing militancy and ushering in peace at the time of 2014 Parliamentary and Assembly elections. Whenever any such attack took place the Indian leaders blamed Pakistan and cautioned that country to refrain from terror activities. Emulating former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Modi too spoke tough and extended hand of friendship to Pakistan. And after the historic Modi-Sharif meet in Ufa, Russia last August, BJP was candid to say that Pakistan has for the first time accepted India’s “definition” of terrorism. This was seen as an opportunity to take forward the relationship between the two countries. The breakthrough saw a glimmer of light in the bilateral relationship which after almost a year looks as a dilution of India’s long-held positions on terrorism and commitments extracted from Pakistan on the issue. Centre’s inconsistency in dealing with Pakistan and all the ill advised steps of Prime Minister Modi on Pakistan shows there is no clear policy on how to deal with the menace of terrorism. The militant attack on a CRPF vehicle in Pampore shows that some where prior information was passed over to terrorists who came in a car that jawans are returning from a firing practice. In the day light attack militants escaped in a car. Can we rule out inside or local hands in such an attack? Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has out rightly condemned the attack and termed that such attacks “defame” the State, she highlighted that the strike had been carried out during Ramzan, the holy month when “people should be seeking forgiveness and expiation for past sins” and “making sure not to hurt others.” Terrorists have no religion except terror and to expect from them humane approach is something myopic from which Indian leadership has not come out.
