JAMMU: Tawi Trekkers, J and K, the biggest Trekking Club of J and K, released its calendar of activities for the year 2016-17, in an impressive function held at KL Saigal Hall, Abhinav Theatre, here.
Prof. Lalit Magotra, an eminent scientist and a writer and a founder member of Tawi Trekkers, who was the Chief Guest, released calendar in the presence of Guest of Honour, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Joint Secretary; Special Guests, Haji Abdul Qayoom, Chief Sports Officer; Rajan Sharma, Divisional Sports Officer of J and K State Sports Council and Rameshwar Mengi, Principal of Shiksha Niketan.
Highlighting the activities to be undertaken by the club this year General Secretary of the Club, Shawetica Khajuria mentioned that the calendar included three Himalayan Trekking programmes one at the beautiful Moungri area of Udhampur for 500 children, Dharamshala and Manali Himalayan Programmes in Himachal Pradesh for about 200 school children each during summer vacations.
As also two trekking expeditions in Dhauladhar Range in Himachal Pradesh for junior and senior members besides regular short treks/visits to heritage sites and Wild Life parks in Jammu region.
To spot the talent in sport climbing at the grass root level and to groom it for future competitions the club has an ambitious plan of conducting regular coaching cum practice camps in co-ordination with Mountaineering Association of J and K at Sprawling Buds School, Jammu.
Those excelling in such camps shall also be deputed for coaching and practice at international standard climbing walls at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi. A State level sport climbing competition shall also be conducted by Tawi Trekkers at Sprawling Buds School in the month of May, 2016.
While releasing the calendar Prof. Lalit Magotra hoped that with concerted efforts of the club and Mountaineering Association of J and K and generous sponsorship of various activities by the J and K State Sports Council, the State would again become a formidable force in sport climbing and mountaineering at the national level.
He also expressed his gratitude to the management of various schools especially Sprawling Buds School, Oriental Academy School, Shangrilla Public School and Shiksha Niketan group of schools for their help and active cooperation to the club for the smooth conduct and promotion of adventure activities. Principal of Shiksha Niketan, Rameshwar Mengi; Administrator of Oriental Academy, Vivek Chauhan ; Director of Sprawling Buds School, Ramesh Khajuria and Principal of Shastri Memorial School, Ravinder Gupta were the prominent persons present on the occasion assured their help and full cooperation to the club for the smooth conduct of its various activities. Other prominent persons present on the occasion included Yogeshwar Kumar, vice president Mountaineering Association of J and K, R.B.S Jamwal, Arjun Singh, Virender Magotra, Rajinder Singh, all founder members of the club, joint secretary of Tawi Trekkers J and K Sonam Sidharth; Navneet Gupta of Snow Trail Mountaineers and Shakti Singh, a veteran sportsman.
