JAMMU: Students of Government College of Women (GCW) Gandhi Nagar, KC International and DCM Public School Paloura on Friday kept their date with heritage and went around the photo exhibition of heritage structures displayed at Kala Kendra.
It was an eye opener for many as several sites depicted in the pictures now don’t actually exist on the ground. The school students showed their enthusiasm and also took down notes on heritage houses.
Today was second day of three-day Photo Exhibition of Heritage Structures of Jammu themed ‘Dying Heritage’ and titled ‘Check and Mate’. Over one hundred and fifty rare pictures taken by Sunny Dua are on display at Kala Kendra which was inaugurated by Minister of State for Culture and Education Priya Sethi at Kala Kendra yesterday wherein Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Mandeep Kaur had presided.
The event was sponsored by HDFC Bank and Jammu Municipal Corporation. The exhibition was organised in collaboration with Kala Kendra, Jammu and is dedicated to Dr S.S Dua, Philanthropist, Chess and a Bridge Player.
Sunny Dua has taken about three and a half years to take these pictures which depict old Jammu of 50s and even 40s. Viewing these pictures is actually like going down the memory lane, said a visitor.
Earlier, the exhibition was visited by school children of Jammu Sanskriti, Lawrence Public School, Presentation Convent School and Oriental Academy who were made to get connected with heritage. Sunny Dua got the inspiration from the fact that he himself stays in a heritage home. He hoped that these pictures will go a long way in connecting people with their roots after which some efforts will be put in to preserve this heritage and our legacy.
The exhibition is being held at Kala Kendra from 5th to 7th May, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. The exhibition not only shows palaces and forts but this is for the first time that anyone has cared to click pictures of old houses, their entrances, parapets, art work, facades, masonry work and other architectural details worth nothing down by engineers, historians, architects, art lovers and citizens who can differentiate between trash and treasure.
The photo exhibition was inaugurated by Minister of State for Culture, Parks Priya Sethi on 5th May.
Taking keen interest in each photograph, Priya said that the painstaking efforts by Simrandeep Singh need recognition and the exhibition should be organised in other parts of the country also, adding that by way of exhibition people would come to know about the heritage of the region.
