Student enrolment in govt schools drops by 3.6 pc in Jammu and KashmirSrinagar: The enrolment of students in government schools in Jammu and Kashmir saw a drop of 3.6 per cent during 2014-15 as compared to 2013-14.

The PDP-BJP government informed the Legislative Assembly that 18.16 lakh students enrolled in government schools in 2014-15 compared to 18.84 lakh a year before.

Replying to a question by BJP MLA R S Pathania, the government said the dropout rate in government-run secondary schools was 25.33 per cent during 2013-14 which has decreased to 23.84 per cent in 2014-15.

As for student dropout rate in primary schools, it stands at 5.66 per cent in 2014-15 as compared to 6.24 per cent in 2013-14 while the figures for upper primary schools were 4.18 per cent and 5.24 per cent respectively.

The government was considering regularising the services of the workers in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) even though there is no provision for such a thing, Education Minister Naeem Akhtar said in the written reply to another query by Pathania.

Akhtar said there was no proposal for introduction of Information-Cum-Technology (ICT) in all the streams in High and Higher Secondary schools under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).

He, however, said each of the 97 Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) will have hostel facility for the girls under the scheme.

Sixty-eight girls’ hostels have been sanctioned and their construction has started as well, he said.

To a query regarding steps taken to resume the construction of school buildings under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and RMSA, Akhtar said his department has sought additional funds from Centre and the state government for the construction of school buildings.

“We have initiated convergence with MGNREGA for resumption of the construction of SSA school buildings and sought sanctioning of funds for the construction of school buildings under RMSA,” he said.
