GUWAHATI: Union Minister for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in his Presidential address at the 10th India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024, declared that the story of ‘Viksit Bharat’ will be written through the lens of science. He emphasized that India’s path to becoming a developed nation is deeply rooted in scientific advancement and innovation. Dr. Singh underscored that technology and research must drive progress across all sectors, from healthcare to infrastructure, contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.

Dr. Singh highlighted six key decisions taken by the Modi government within the first five months of its third term, which reinforce India’s commitment to scientific progress. Notable initiatives include the establishment of a ?1 lakh crore National Research Foundation, a ?1,000 crore Venture Fund for space startups, and the launch of Mission Mausam for enhanced weather forecasting. He also mentioned the Bio-E3 initiative, focusing on biotechnology for environmental and economic growth, and the “One Nation, One Subscription” policy for universal access to academic journals for over 2 crore students. Additionally, the Atal Innovation Mission has been extended to further nurture innovation.
Aligning with the theme “India as the Global Manufacturing Hub for Science and Technology,” Dr. Singh highlighted India’s growing leadership in bio-manufacturing, semiconductors, and medical instruments, with significant investments and policies backing fields like quantum technology and semiconductor manufacturing.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of science communication and urged greater outreach to smaller towns and rural areas to inspire young innovators. Dr. Singh called for a national approach to innovation, urging that startups should emerge from every corner of India.
The IISF 2024, organized by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), saw over 10,000 students from across the country participate, making it a major platform for fostering scientific curiosity and innovation. The event’s “Whole of Science” approach brought together ministries, policymakers, and stakeholders, with a shared vision for a scientifically advanced India by 2047.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Singh expressed optimism about India’s scientific future, emphasizing that the youth, especially startups, will lead the country to global leadership in science and technology.
