Incidentally, the recent exposure that more than 68 per cent of milk in the country does not conform to the standards laid down by the food regulator and the presence of hazardous adulterants like detergents, caustic soda, glucose, white paint and refined oil etc, calls for strict measures to stop adulteration of milk and milk products.
Although food spoilage is a routine business in our country, the apparent listlessness of successive Governments, in containing the offenders, is skeptical. Undoubtedly, the current mechanism to ensure the quality of food items, available in the open market is inadequate and, therefore, a comprehensive revamping of the system is vital in the interest of the people.
