Still in darkness
Dear Editor,
It was Gandhiji who said that the soul of India lives in its villages but every government we get has remained largely oblivious to rural issues. The hollow claims about rural electrification should make officials re-examine their policies. Plans are usually made with scant knowledge of the ground realities in rural India. I feel the government should now carry out a social audit of expenditure in rural India and get the approval of village panchayats before classifying a village as ‘electrified’. Subsidised electricity schemes exist for rural areas but are mis-targeted.
