Srinagar- Ladakh highway reopens after 5 months
Srinagar: The highway connecting Ladakh region with Jammu and Kashmir reopened after remaining closed for the past five months due to accumulation of five to 10-feet snow on the route.
However, only light vehicles were allowed on trial basis, official sources said.
They said light vehicles were allowed from Meenmarg towards Sonamarg as snow on the road has been cleared.
“The decision to allow heavy vehicles will be taken only after assessing the road condition and after it is ensured that there is no threat of avalanches,” they said.
The highway was closed officially due to slippery road conditions in December last year.
The Beacon authorities recently launched snow clearance operation from Drass and Sonamarg-side simultaneously.
Meanwhile, divisional administration authorities are making arrangements to rush essentials, including food, vegetables, building material, petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders to different parts of Ladakh region, which remained cut off for the past five months.
